ANIMAL REPRODUCTION AND GENETICS PROGRAM

The livestock sector has a unique position in the National Agenda of economic development of Pakistan. The livestock sector accounts for 60.6 % of agricultural value added and about 11.7% of the National GDP (Economic Survey of Pakistan 2019-20). The role of livestock in rural economy may be realized from the fact that 30-35 million rural populations is engaged with livestock raising. According to the Livestock Census 2020 90% population of animals was described as non-descript, which has lower production in terms of milk and meat. Average national yield of local dairy cattle is not more than 700 liters per lactation. Goat production is also the main component of Livestock sector. It plays pivotal role in poverty alleviation and income generation for rural and most marginal areas, especially for those with harsh climatic conditions. Demand of milk and meat is continuously increasing due to population growth, urbanization, changed eating patterns, increase in per capita income and export opportunities. To overcome this burden, there is a dire need of increasing per unit animal productivity by usingmodern reproductive techniques like Artificial insemination, controlled breeding and use of sexed sperm. Therefore, Animal Reproduction and Genetics program is efficiently working to improve the reproductive efficiency and exploit the genetic potential of food animals through reproductive techniques from last forty years.

The Program is currently working on the modern reproductive techniques like sperm cryopreservation, controlled breeding, laparoscopic artificial insemination and sperm sexing to improve the reproductive efficiency and exploit the genetic potential of food animals for better productivity.
