SUCCESS STORIES

(1) InqalabMung: A high yielding, bold seeded, logging & disease resistant variety of mungbean:

Mungbean is one of the best alternatives to meet the food needs of the large population of the developing countries on account of its short duration, nutritional superiority and nitrogen fixing character. It is the current practice in cereal-producing areas of KPK to grow gram or wheat in rotation with fallow, while mungbean is best fit for this fallow time. In KPK, so far, a few mungbean varieties have been released for general cultivation during Kharif season only while for spring season none of the variety has been released. Keeping in view the dire need to develop a high yielding, disease resistant and well adapted variety which could perform better in spring and Kharif seasons, hybridization work was started by AZRC (PARC) scientists at Dera Ismail Khan

The line DM-3 showed outstanding performance regarding desired parameters in series of experiments locally and nationally. It got 1st position among all candidate lines during 2008 and 2009 with tremendous yield of 3620 kg ha-1 at ARS, Mingora. Crop Disease Research Institute (CDRI) gave disease response results and it was also tested on sick patches for diseases resistance at NIAB, both results confirmed its resistance against Yellow mosaic virus, Charcoal rot, bacterial leaf spot and leaf crinkle virus. Inqalab Mung has been successfully defended in provincial seed council and is recommended for general cultivation.

(2) Quality Seed Production wheat, chickpea and mung-bean:

Availability of good quality seed of the recent improved varieties is the most basic, critical and vital input for the sustainability in growth of agricultural production. The AZRC scientists in order to accelerate the availability of quality seed; multiplied the quality seed of wheat, chickpea and mungbean. Wheat varieties Hashim-2009, Gomal-2009, Sahar, Zam-2009, Uqaab and E-10 (Aafaq) were multiplied and 15000 kg quality seed was produced under supervision of Federal Seed Certification and Registration Department. Basic and Pre-basic category seed (3000 kg) of chickpea cultivars NIFA-2005 and KK-1 was produced.

(3) Innovations in Spate irrigated areas

A complete package of technologies for proper land and water managements in remote Rod kohi areas in close coordination with local farming communities were developed. Co-ordination with International donors and national NGO were also established to replicate the successful research outcome for development of the target areas.

Outcome

PARC has successfully developed the technologies for equitable   diversion/distribution of flood water, its conveyance through earthen channel and application on farm level.

First ever Gated diversion structures were installed in these ecologies for efficient water distribution.

Excess water spillways were designed for safety of the channel network.

Innovative field inlets were constructed with stability features to withstand more flood pressure.

Plastic sheets provided earthen ponds were developed for drinking water.

Spate irrigated areas have transformed into a productive sector and it is no more a subsistence level farming system.
