INTRODUCTION

Pakistan coastland from Runn of Kutch (Sindh) up to Jiwani (Baluchistan) is 1046 km. The topo and demo-graphic situation at Sindh coast, however, differs from Baluchistan coast. Under this scenario small scale intervention to introduce various agricultural technologies for the strengthening of local farmers would not only enhance the productivity but would also create new jobs and aid in poverty reduction in target areas. 

OBJECTIVES

  • Expansion of plant germ plasm, collection of seed and colonially propagated crops.

  • To gain knowledge about chemical biological and agronomic potentials of selected plant species.

  • Development of package of cultivation practices for new crop introductions.

  • Propagation and distribution of new crop introductions.

  • To work out cost benefit ratio and commercialize the new crop introductions.

CURRENT RESEARCH FOCUS

  • The establishment and maintenance of some medicinal and legumes plants under coconut plantation.

  • Regional evaluation of multipurpose legume tree (Gliricidia sepium) in coastal area of Sindh and Baluchistan.

  • Characterization of young coconut based on morphological characters/features under field conditions.

  • Influence of certain physical and chemical treatment on the germination and subsequent growth of coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) seedlings.

  • Effect of different combinations of N, P and K on growth and yield of Papaya.

  • Studies on growth and yield of chillies (Capsicum annum, L.) as affected by N in presence and absence of P and K.

  • Effect of nitrogen and phosphorus on growth and seed yield of carrot (Daucus carota, l.).

  • Studies on comparison of old and new technology of onion (Allium cepa, L.) seed production.

  • Varietal trials of twelve potatoes (Solanum tuberosum, L.) for growth and yield evaluation during autumn season.

  • Influence of certain organic and inorganic fertilizer treatments on the germination and subsequent growth of different coconut (Cocoa nucifera L.) seedlings.

  • Effect of Gliricidia sepium and farm yard manure with and without NPK application on the growth and yield characters of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum, L.)

  • To establish and maintain fruit plants through drip irrigation system.

  • Testing of indigenously developed bio-fertilizer, plant growth regulators and hormones for increasing fruit plant resistance and yield.

  • Formulation and efficacy evaluation of bio-pesticides against fruit and vegetable pests.

MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS
Research

  • Coconut genetic resources collection in Pakistan and germplasm evaluation under sub-optimal environmental condition. This COGENT (Coconut Genetic Recourses Network for Asia and the Pacific Region) Malaysia activity is still maintained.

  • Evaluated, propagated and disseminated packages for the cultivation of Custard Apple, Pine Apple, Guava, Pomengrate, Grafted Ber, Papaya, and Coconut.

  • Developed composting and vermicomposting techniques for utilization of farm waste as organic manure.

  • Introduced Glaricidia sepium for biomass production and usage as ornamental and organic fertilizer.

  • Introduced and demonstrated Water conservation and mechanized irrigation systems in periurban areas of Karachi and Lasbella districts.

  • Demonstrated economic benefit of cultivating fruit and vegetables using drip irrigation techniques on farmer fields.

  • Successfully grown Cassava (Manihot esculenta) at Bhawany, Lasbella and isolated, prepared and evaluated its flour and starch usage in bakery products, as alternate to potato chips and starch for textile industry at small scale.

  • Developed Jatropha plantation on 22 acres at Pipri Marshelling Yard of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Terminal of PSO at Karachi.

  • Tested conversion of Castor, Neem, Jojoba and Jatropha oil through transesterification into biodiesel. Jojoba and Jatropha oil were found most suitable for this purpose.

  • Many Farmers of Karachi peri-urban area including Memon Goth, Gaddap, Kathore, Malir, Landhi and Lasbella District Balochistan have adopted drip irrigation technology and cultivating vegetables, banana and ber etc using this system.

  • Organic cultivation of fruit and vegetables is gaining popularity but at a slow pace.

  • Entomopathogenic nematodes based biopesticides demonstrated effective control over fruit flies.

  • Carried out R&D activities related to various aspects of Horticulture including introduction and plantation of Xerophytes and halophytes at CARS Farms and SARC.

  • Initiated vermiculture, vermicompost and compost research at CARS. Earthworms samples were forwarded to Department of Zoology, KU for their proper identification but could not be identified.

  • Initiated Cassava and Jatropha tissue culture activity in collaboration with KU and obtained a batch of 1000 plants each with 89% success in acclimatization of plants.

  • An attempt to grow different medicinal plants was initiated at CARS, in January, 2009. At present 90 plants of Aloevera, 260 of Nazboo, 50 of Sadabahar, 16 of Mehndi, 05 of Aamla and 10 of Kewra are growing well. Nazboo plants produced seed which was collected, dried and stored in polyethylene bag. Aloevera sp. was also planted at SARC main campus.

  • Located wild salicornia plants in coastal area of Sindh and Hub, district Lasbella Baluchistan. Small quantities of seeds of the wild Salicornia species were collected for laboratory analysis and are under progress to quantify the oil content.

  • A decoction of Gliricidia sepium and Azadirachta indica leaves was prepared and tested against mealy bug species affecting Jatropha curcas. The material provided 65-85% control of the infection.

Patents Obtained 
Developed process of using three entomopathogenic nematodes as a bio-pesticide against subteranean termite Microtermis spp. (Isoptera: Macrotermitidae). Developed a process for preparation of bio-pesticides using Xenorhabdus nematophila (strain HAM,-10) against Wax moth larvae and Vine mealy bug in Pakistan; PART II] THE GAZETTE OF PAKISTAN, EXTRA DEC. 31, 2003 2858; Shahina Fayyaz*, Asim Rehan Kazmi**, Tabassum Ara Khanum*, Mahreen Gulsher* and Salma Javed* (Patent & Design Act 1911, Serial No. 140579).

Services

  • Initiated floriculture and ornamental plant test cultivation for sustainable earnings of sub-urban farmers.

  • Provided technical guidance to AEDB, PSO and Pakistan Navy on Jatropha cultivation.

CURRENT RESEARCH PROGRAMS

  • Maintenance of existing horticultural plants/orchards of coconut chiku, custard apple, pomegranate, ber, tamarind, jojoba, dates and oil palm.

  • Maintenance of recently established nursery of xerophytes, ornamental, flower and fruit plants.

  • Maintenance and scaling up of nursery plants, seedling propagation etc.

  • Semi-commercial scale vermiculture (Local earthworm) production. Experiments on composting of organic farm waste using polyethylene tubes/ enclosure and /or soil pits.

  • Multiplication of Cassava stock for extracting starch and expediting other uses.

  • Introduction of some new plant species like Avocado, Rambo teen, Papaya (Thailand variety), pineapple and other tropical fruits.

  • Semi-commercial scale cultivation and testing of Jatropha curcas (the Bio-Diesel Plant) in collaboration with Pakistan State Oil (PSO).
