MOUNTAIN AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH CENTRE

ACHIEVEMENTS 

MARC during the last two decades followed multidirectional approach focusing on research for productivity enhancement, development of research infrastructure, strengthening of existing establishment and the strategic planning for a productive agricultural research system in Gilgit-Baltistan. The research activities of the center were mostly concentrated on identification of high yielding disease resistant germplasm of cereals, fruits, vegetables, pulses, and fodders, development of cultivation methodologies for important medicinal plants, introduction and multiplication of trout, improved seed and plant multiplication and also dissemination of research knowledge and technologies. in the early years almost all activities were carried out at Juglote.

The scope of the center was gradually extended as research was initiated as some new discipline were included in the research agenda besides establishing research stations in other areas of Gilgit-Baltistan including Chilas, Skardu, and Astore. Salient achievements of the Center are briefly described as follows.

Research Accomplishments

Despite  several challenges like harsh climatic and topographic conditions meager resources, poor infrastructure and capacity , MARC was able to make headway in identification of high yielding crop varieties, development of cultivation methodologies for medicinal plants, introduction of trout  fish farming and commercialization of Seabuckthorn  products etc.

High yielding varieties of wheat, maize, fruits, vegetables and fodders have been selected for cultivation in various ecological zone of Gilgit-Baltistan. Promising varieties are:

Improved germplasm including seed of promising crop varieties and certified fruit

plants was produced and distributed among interested farmers.

Low cost plastic tunnel technology for off-season vegetable production was developed and transferred to farmers.

Production technologies for different vegetable were developed and disseminated.

Cultivation methodology for medicinal plants including Kuth (Sassurea lappa),

Thyme, white cumin and black cumin were developed.Propagation of black cumin from seed and bulbs under farm conditions was successfully attempted for the first time in Pakistan.

Economic importance of Seabuckthorn a magic plant was explored and established. Food, Medicinal and Cosmetic products were developed from

Seabuckthorn berries and seed and introduced among communities. Seabuckthorn oil is the most valuable among all the products.

Trout pond culture has been developed for rainbow and brown trout.

Around 2.0 million disease free trout fingerlings  have been produced and

                supplied to the communities.
