Visit of Ms. Jeanie Borlaug Laube along with delegation of International scientists to NARC
Ms. Jeanie Borlaug Laube along with delegation of International scientists visited NARC on April 22, 2014. Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad, Chairman, PARC and his team Dr. Shahid Masood, Member (PSD), Dr. Nadeem Amjad, Member (NRD), Dr. Shahid Rafique, Member (ASD), Mr. Muhammad Riaz Khan, Member (Coordiantion), Dr. Muhammad Azeem Khan, DG NARC, Dr. Muhammad Munir Goraya, Focal Person (Borlaug Celebrations)/Secretary PARC, and other senior scientist of PARC and NARC welcomed the delegates and briefed on-going research activities of wheat at NARC.
Ms. Jeanie Borlaug Laube daughter of Dr. Borlaug planted a plant at NARC Campus; she also inaugurated “Borlaug Avenue” at NARC, Foreign scientists’ delegation from Borlaug Global Rust Initiative (BGRI) USA visited NARC Wheat Farm Field Area and Exhibition.
Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad, Chairman PARC and Dr. Shahid Masood, Member (PSD) briefed the delegations about the important wheat varieties such as NR-399 (Proposed name Borlaug 2014), NR-421, Pakistan-2013, Galaxy-2013, Punjab 2011, AARI-2011, Millat-2011, NaRC-2011, NARC-2009, Lasani-2008, Faisalabad-2008, Sehar-06, Inqlab-91, Pak-81, Mexi Pak 65, C-273. They also briefed about varieties resistant to yellow rust, leaf rust and stem rust race of Ug99.
The delegation visited Wheat Research field farm area of NARC to observe wheat NUWYT. Dr. Shahid Masood, Member (PSD) was also briefed the foreign delegates about national wheat testing systems in Pakistan, biofortified high Zn wheat, Zero tillage wheat, ridge planting of wheat, bed plantation of wheat, wheat rust research in Pakistan, wheat rust screening, rust surveillance in Pakistan, etc. They also visited latest machinery for sowing and harvesting of wheat available with the NARC. Later on the delegates also visited PGRI GeneBank where Dr. Shahid Masood briefed the participants about goals and objectives of Genebank for acquisition of germplasm, conservation, distribution to end-users and data management and information sharing.
At the end of the day Ms. Jeanie and foreign delegates appreciated the research work being conducted by PARC and other national scientists in Pakistan.
