Crop Sciences Institute

CROP SCIENCES INSTITUTE
NARC, Islamabad

The Crop Sciences Institute was instituted in 1990 with the objectives to exploit the potential of the various crop commodities to ensure the food security situation. The main mandate of the institute is:

  • To conduct strategic research on National/Provincial priorities and emerging challenges in agriculture,
  • Collaborate and maintain linkages with International and National and Provincial Research Organizations;
  • Impart professional training to on-job scientists and internee students of various agricultural Universities/colleges throughout the country.

But the major task of the institute is research and development related to broader areas of crop improvement and production in the major crop commodities. These include;

Wheat-Barley, Rice, Maize, Sorghum, Millet, Oilseed Crops (Sunflower, Brassica, Groundnut, Sesame, soybean, Linseed), Pulses (Chickpea, Lintel, Mung, Mash), Sugar crops (Sugar cane, Sugar beet), Fodder Crops.

The institute focuses on the development of high yielding crop varieties and improved production technologies to achieve and sustain food security, improve livelihood through knowledge based agriculture.

It also provides services to provincial and educational institutions and private sector in crop germplasm evaluation and supply and testing of their candidate lines for performance in varied ecologies of the country through National Uniform Yield Trial (NUYT) system.

The Crop Sciences Institute has the following  research programs:

  2. Rice Research Program
  3. Oil Seed Program
  4. Sugar Crops Research Program
  5. National Coordinated Pulses Program
  6. Fodder Research Program
  7. Maize, Millet, Sorghum Research Program
  8. Plant Physiology Program
