Islamabad (October 28)………….. The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research has visited Salahuddin Olive Farms in District Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) to witness the olive plantation made by Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC). The committee meeting was also held at the site under the Chairmanship of Malik Shakir Bashir Awan, MNA. The parliamentary committee after witnessing the good production of olive plantation at Sahaluddin farms, they appreciated the efforts of PARC for promotion of olive cultivation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
On this occasion, the Progressive Farmer, Salahuddin Khan gave a brief about his farm. He informed that he had planted 12000 - 13000 olive plants with combination of lemon on 50 acre lands. He said the olive cultivation is irrigated with solar base drip irrigation system. Mostly the plants age 3 year’s old and some of them are fruiting. He also told about the cost for the development of his farm specially establishment of solar system and drip irrigation system. He appreciated the efforts of PARC and NARC for supply of various varieties of olive plants to him. He requested the parliamentary committee and Federal Minister of National Food Security and Research (NFS&R) to give him incentive to promote solar technology in the area for water requirement of agriculture activities as well as some training in olive developed country.
Chairman PARC, Dr. Yusuf Zafar T.I. highlighted the history of olive how it reach first time in Swat KPK, its value chain and oil extraction. He said that there is great potential of olive cultivation in KPK. Director General NARC, Dr. M Azeem Khan said PARC utilizing marginal land, remote and poor area for cultivation of olive in the country. Responding to a query he said PARC is also promoting olive in Sindh and AZRI Umerkot promoting different varieties, which perform well, will be recommended for cultivation in the province.
National Project Director (Olive) PARC, Dr. Khalid Mahmood Qureshi, highlighted olive project activities and achievements whereas Project Incharge (Olive) KPK, Dr. Abdul Samad gave a detailed briefing to the committee members about olive project activities in KPK. He said that PARC has provided all olive plants to Salahauddin under Pakistan Italian Debt-for Development Swap Agreement (PIDSA) project titled Promotion of Olive Cultivation for Economic Development and Poverty Alleviation. He said that his team is creating awareness among the farming communities of KPK province through workshops, field days and visits to cultivate olive on marginal and stony land.
Federal Secretary for NFS&R, Muhammad Abid Javed also expressed his views and assured full support to PARC for implementation of olive project of nation building.
Later on the committee members and PARC scientists visited olive farm field area and witnessed the fruits on corotina and uslu olive varieties. They appreciated the efforts of Salahauddin and DG NARC said it’s a success story and declared it a model olive farm in the Nowshera region.
On this occasion, Federal Minister for NFS&R, Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan and Chairman N.A. Standing Committee, Malik Shakir Bashir Awan gave an interview to PTV & other local TV channels and said that they were feeling pleasure to see the progress of olive plantation at Salahuddin Farm. They appreciated the efforts of Salahuddin and said it’s a model for other farmers of the area who can benefit from his experience. Minister also highlighted the Morocco model of olive for sharing experience in future.
