One day workshop on “Strengthening Impact Assessment in CGIAR (SIAC)” regarding Tracking Potato Improved Cultivars Adoption in Pakistan was organized by the Directorate of Potato, Department of Horticulture Research and Development, NARC in collaboration with International Center of Potato (CIP), Lima, Peru and Social Sciences Research Iinstitute, NARC on 4th August, 2016 at NARC, Islamabad. More than 25 participants from different institutions and provinces of Pakistan attended the workshop at PIASA, NARC. The workshop was started by the recitation of Holy Quran.
The discussion of workshop focuses on the documentation of adoption and diffusion of main potato varieties along with their genetic pedigree, main traits, weakness and strengths of the traits, year of release as well as the institutional sources of these varieties. The role of International Potato Center (CIP)in the process of potato varietal release was imperative.
The Director, Directorate of Potato, DHRD well come the participants, Dr. Awais Khan, Senior Scientist, International Potato Centre (CIP) highlighted the role of workshop, its significance and its application in today’s scenario of climate change.
Dr. Tariq Mehmood, in his inaugural address highlighted the importance of potato in terms of food security, nutrition and economic aspect. He also described that it’s vital to conserve genetic diversity of Potato to ensure its availability for breeding and other uses.
Dr. Hassnain Shah carried out the technical session of the workshop and guided all the participants regarding addition, collection and summarizing the statistical data of potato varieties from all provinces of Pakistan.
Dr. Muhammad Azeem Khan in his concluding remarks appreciated the organizers, team members and the participants from all over the country to make this workshop successful.
