ACHIEVEMENTS & RESEARCH OUTPUTS

A. Production Technology

  • Developed production package of technologies including planting method, sowing times, optimum use of fertilizer, plant density, moisture conservation and quality seed for different crops growing in rainfed and rod-kohi areas. Adoption of these techniques increased the grain yield of wheat, gram and mungbean by 20-50%. The improved practices were transferred to the end-users through demonstrations plots on farmer’s field, field days, distribution of Urdu pamphlets and radio talks.
  • In view of scarcity of fodder for livestock in dry areas, improved techniques of grazing chickpea, topping rape-seed, cutting of barley and wheat at 6-8 leaves stage for green fodder without loss in grain yield were determined and disseminated to the end users through demonstration plots and distribution of Urdu pamphlets/leaflets etc.
  • Developed package of technologies for reclamation of salt affected soils with successful production of rice, barley and wheat. Improved techniques of soil reclamation showed an increase of 36 and 69% in grain yield of rice and wheat, respectively. The improved technologies were transferred to the end-users through demonstration plots on farmer’s field.
  • Application of soil amendments proved very successful in amelioration of salinity problem and establishment of falsa (Grewiaasiatica) and guava (Psidiumgujava) fruit plants in salt affected soil.
  • Determined suitable planting techniques for multiplication of range grass species for fodder production and availability of root stalk to the farmers of the area.

B. Varietal Development

Mungbean variety (Inqalab Mung) has been released for general cultivation by Provincial Seed Council, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In consultation with Federal Seed Certification and Registration officer, Dera Ismail Khan, 2nd year DUS (Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability) data was recorded and jointly confirmed in the field, on candidate line of mungbean (AZRIDK-01), wheat (Afaq), Barley (Sana) and Rapeseed (Mohsin-2012). These promising lines of different crops are in pipe line for variety development suitable for the area.

Supplied promising lines of one each Mungbean, Mashbean, Wheat & rapeseed for wider adoptability testing in NUYT-2013.

Data recorded on maize, sunflower, sesame, millet, sorghum, chickpea (Desi and Kabuli types), lentil, rapeseed, mustard and wheat NUYTs were compiled and sent to Coordinator, National coordinated program, NARC, Islamabad.

C. Technology Transfer

For development of package of technology for mungbean candidate line AZRIDK-01, 20 cm row spacing with 30 kg ha-1 seed rate and sowing time, mid of May were found promising to obtain highest grain yield compared to the other treatments.

It was observed that acropetal application (Spray method) of herbicide was better than basipetal application of herbicide with surface irrigation. Spray of Puma super @ 1250 ml
ha-1+ Buctril super @ 750 ml ha-1 gave the highest grain yield (3983 kg ha-1) of wheat compared to other treatments applied alone or in combination with either mode of herbicide application.

Application of biozote @ 2.5 kg ha-1 with 90-90 NP kg ha-1 to wheat crop increased the yield by 28% over the yield (2713 kg ha-1) obtained with 90-90 NP kg ha-1 alone.

Established Jatropha nursery and made plantation on an area of 5 acres for seed production and to disseminate among the interested growers.

Orchards of fourteen different varieties of ber have been established to select suitable ber variety for arid and semi arid regions

  • Developedprogeny garden of fifteen different cultivars of date palm to select high yielding of goodquality date palm cultivars for multiplication &propagation among the growers of the area
  • Five hundred off-shoots (suckers) of different date palm cultivars are available for transplantation and further propagation among the date palm growers of the area. Date palm orchard

D. Technology Transfer

Introduced the use of low cost bio- fertilizers and composts (Bio-zote and humic acid etc) for successful production with significant increase in grain yield of wheat, gram, mung-bean and rice that also help in saving of chemical fertilizer up to 50 % for these crops.

To minimize the risk of crop failure in rainfed and rod-kohi areas, AZRC introduced improved practices of intercropping of two or more crops (wheat, gram, lentil and canola) on the same piece of land with an increase of monetary return up to 26% compared to sole cropping of either crop in the area

Introduced Laptochloaefusca grass successfully for fodder production in salt affected waterlogged soils of Paharpur area (D.I. Khan) where traditional crops failed to survive.

Introduced and popularized the cultivation of canola type rape-seed, Jatropha, caster bean and sukh-chain plants for increase of edible oil and bio-fuel production.

E.    Quality seed production:

In addition to research mandate, AZRC also focused on quality seed production of different crops to facilitate farmers in the availability of reliable seed at proper time of sowing. With meager resources, AZRC produced half ton mungbean, twenty seven ton wheat, seven ton gram, two ton oat, half tone barley and one hundred and thirty kg rape seed during the year 2012-13.

F.  Use of Alternate energy sources for pumping water in Agriculture

An ALP funded project with the above caption was launched at AZRC, D.I. Khan in 2010 and till now has proved to be a real success in filling the gap between demand & availability of energy in the Agricultural sector development. A 39m3 dome type biogas digester is constructed at D.I. Khan and is producing gas equivalent to run a 12 hp diesel engine for 7-8 hours and providing energy to a household of 40 people on daily basis.

Similarly a 1960 watt capacity solar panel system to run a submersible pump of 1800 watt and providing 2.25litre /sec water for irrigation of orchard is under working at AZRC farm. Students from Gomal University, other researchers and local farmers are taking keen interest in the adoption of these techniques.

G. Demonstration of High Efficiency Irrigation System

A Central Pivot Irrigation System (CPIS) covering 20 acres of land at the AZRC farm near bypass road is installed to demonstrate the state of the art irrigation machine for quality seed development & multiplication. This equipment is now an icon for the institute’s as well as outside researchers, students and NGO’s.

Similarly a 03 acre drip irrigation system is installed for development of orchard and seasonal vegetables. This system can operate on high pressure as of solar pump and with gravity flow as of a 20ft elevated masonry tank Water saving of 30-40% can be anticipated from this type of low cost drip irrigation system and can be adopted by the farmers with economy in the total cost
