As per request of Chairperson (DA&ABM) University of Karachi students visited PARC-SARC, Karachi on 08-11-2019. The purpose of the visit was to witness on going activities being carried out at PARC-SARC in general and Tissue Culture and Biological Control labs in particular.
Dr. Akhlaq Ahmed (PSO/Director, FQSRI) welcomed the teachers, students and informed about the ongoing internship programme at PARC-SARC in order to get practical knowledge about research activities. Mr. Parwaiz Ahmed Baloch (PSO/TCL) informed the students about banana diseases, techniques being used in micropropagation of banana, components of tissue culture lab, different equipments, chemicals, procedures i.e. sucker initiation, preparation of nutrient medium, its storage, process of multiplication, importance of growth room and shifting of plants in screen house for hardening purpose.
Mr. Muhammad Samiullah Channa (SSO, PMRI) informed about morphological characteristics of papaya mealy bug with diagrams and videos. The biology of mealy bug, host plants, mode of dispersal along with damages, collection and rearing methods of infested leaves in biological labs were explained. An animated cycle of egg, larva, pupa and adult was also shown. Its natural enemy, Acerophagus papayae—a parasitoid of PMB augmentation process is also shown by video and narration during the seminar. After presentations question answer session was held too.
Dr. Syed Asim Rehan Kazmi (CSO/DG, PARC-SARC) advised students to become serious in studies, responsible, utilize teachers’ experience, get knowledge and accelerate your skills in the field of agriculture and agribusiness. As students are future builders of the nation therefore become composed and disciplined during your study period.
Later students visited Plant Tissue Culture and Biological Control labs and witness on going activities about banana micropropagation and rearing of papaya mealy bug and Acerophagus papayae—its parasitoid.
Mr. Sohail Iqbal (Sen. Artist) and Mr. Intasab Nabi Khan (PRO) performed their duties during the event.
