Dr. Philiippus Wester (ICIMOD)'s, Chief Scientist (Water) meeting with Chairman PARC

Islamabad (October 20)………….. Dr. Philippus Wester, Chief Scientist (Water) of International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) Nepal and Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) senior scientist’s team led by Dr. Nadeem Amjad, Chief Scientist and Member Natural Resources Division met newly appointed Chairman PARC  Dr. Yusuf Zafar T.I. at PARC (HQs) on October 19. The other senior members of the scientists include Qurban Hussain, Director (Water), Dr. Muhammad Munir Ahmad, Director of Climate Change, Alternate Energy and Water Resources Institute (CAEWRI) and Dr. Bashir Ahmad, Principal Scientific Officer & Project Incharge HI-AWARE.

The scientists briefed the Chairman PARC about the objectives and activities of the Project titled “Himalayan Adaptation, Water and Resilience (HI-AWARE) Research on Glacier and Snowpack Dependent River Basins for Improving Livelihoods”. The project is funded by International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and United Kingdom’s Department for International Development and executed by CAEWRI-PARC. The ICIMOD is providing technical support to implement this project in Pakistan.

While briefing the Chairman PARC, Dr. Nadeem Amjad said that the main objective of the project is to adapt potential climate change resilient approaches and practices. He said that the HI-AWARE project establishing piloting sites at farmers field in Soan Basin, Chaj Doab and in Hunza Basin. He said that under this project glacial mass balance monitoring system has been installed in Shimshal valley of Hunza river basin at elevation of 5000 m from mean sea level. Water station has also been installed in Chakri of Soan Basin, he added.

Dr. Nadeem Amjad further briefed that this project has also down scaled climate change projections of 5 km in Upper Indus Basin (UIB) and 10 km in Indus Basin. Hi-aware project is focusing modeling studies on future water availability and demand scenario as well as climate extremes.
