PARC, CIMMYT & USAID hold National Maize Workshop to review progress and future plan

Islamabad (April 11, 2017):  Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) in collaboration with CIMMYT – USAID organized National Maize Workshop “Annual Progress Review” at National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) Islamabad on Tuesday.

Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan, Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research (MNFS&R) on inaugural sessionsaid that the workshop aimed at best way forward in developing the Maize Farming in Pakistan. He said that farmers in Pakistan have succeeded in getting highest grain yield from maize than any other cereal crop. He further said that we have introduced wheat and rice crop varieties in different zone of Pakistan and due to hard work of farmers these are growing high. He said that the quality of seed and method of farming plays key role in production of any crop.

Federal Minister said USAID has supported agriculture sector of Pakistan a lot and I hope that it will continue in future. He also mentioned that poverty is getting less in Pakistan due to new innovations in agriculture sector.

Ms. Julie Chen, Dy. Mission Director, USAID said on  this occasion that this work have done the miles away and from 50 years US and Pakistan states are in a link.She said that a number of farmers are connected through this project. Major goals of USAID is to develop the skills of farmers and use of new technology in different fields. She said that working together we will be handier in production development techniques, funding techniques and enhancing the ability of farmers to grow more. She said that this workshop is a greater possibility of learning and growing. She said that USA will provide every possible help to uplift the agriculture sector of Pakistan.

Dr. Yusuf Zafar(T.I), Chairman PARC said that we will have to be focused on the methods of improvement of agriculture sector of Pakistan. He said that Pakistan have more farmers than any other country in the world. We obtained the highest input through agriculture sector. He further said PARC with the collaboration of CIMMYT and other partners have done great work in agri sector and will also struggle hard to uplift the maize crop production in Pakistan.

Dr. M Azeem Khan, Director General, NARC said that we introduced hybrid of crop before one year and I would proud to announce that NARC is going on the way of success and growing superbly day by day by presenting more new techniques to the farmer’s community and by developing new crop varieties.

Dr. Imtiaz, CIMMYT Country Representative-Pakistan said that CIMMYT will continue help PARC towards innovating new ideas and possibilities to grow-up production. He said that we already worked a lot in this regard and in future this collaboration will show extra ordinary results towards better livelihood of farming community and more crop production in Pakistan.
