Muhammad Ibrahim

Mr. Muhammad Ibrahim did his BSc. (Hons) and MSc. (Hons) Agriculture with specialization in Plant Pathology from NWFP Agricultural University, Peshawar. He initiated his career as Research Officer in a HEC funded research project “Production of virus free citrus propagative budwood in Pakistan in 2000 to 2002 in NWFP Agriculture University, Peshawar. He joined another HEC project “Effect of fungicides application on the control of powdery mildew and yield in pea”as Research Officer in 2003.

In 2004 he was selected as Trainee Research Fellow in Nuclear Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Peshawar as a result of country wide competition. He remain involved in the i) disease resistance characterization of wheat genotypes against Yellow and Leaf rusts, Powdery mildew and Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus, ii) Surveillance of wheat rusts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, iii) effectiveness of yellow rust resistance, iv) testing of stability of yellow rust resistance at multilocation, v) identification of slow rusting lines, vi) disease screening of elite and candidate wheat material for national wheat improvement program, vii) pre-release evaluation of candidate lines for various diseases under National Uniform Wheat Yield Trial (NUWYT) and viii) wheat improvement through Seed Health Testing  in Plant Pathology Group of Plant Breeding and Genetics Division of NIFA.

He was promoted as Junior scientist in 2007 and since 2010 he is working as Senior Scientist in the same group of Plant Breeding and Genetics Division of NIFA. He is actively involve as team-member in the objective 1, 2, and 4 in NIFA component of Wheat Productivity Enhancement Project (W-PEP) funded by USDA through CIMMYT. He is also actively involved in wheat improvement through screening of wheat candidate varieties against wheat diseases through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Wheat Yield Trials and is member of the Farmer’s Day organizing committee of NIFA. He has co-organized one day workshop on “Diagnosis & Research Methodology of Wheat Rusts” at NIFA in March 2012.

Mr. Ibrahim was awarded as USDA Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellowship Program in 2012 and worked at CIMMYT, Mexico and CIMMYT/KARI, Kenya. During his fellowship he participated in Advance Wheat Improvement Course. He also remain involved in CIMMYT Global Wheat Program regarding field evaluation of wheat material at El Batan for Leaf Rust and at Toluca for Yellow Rust. He also conducted part of his PhD experiments at CIMMYT, Mexico which is contributing much in his PhD work. This fellowship has enhanced his professional skills and confidence through working with scientists of CIMMYT Global Wheat Program. He also screened Pakistani wheat material with world’s renowned scientists against Yellow and Stem Rusts at KARI, Kenya.

Mr. Ibrahim is working in Wheat Pathology Group which has national and international collaborations. He has participated and successfully completed three international and five national professional trainings on wheat improvement. He is author/co-author of twenty-five research papers published and presented in refereed journals, national and international conferences.
