Nadeem Ahmad

Mr. Nadeem Ahmad completed his MSc. (Hons) with specialization in Plant Breeding & Genetics from University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. He initiated his professional career working in a private seed company during 2001. Afterwards, he was selected twice through Punjab Public Service Commission; as Assistant Research Officer in 2003 and in a higher position as Assistant Botanist in 2010 in the Research wing of Agriculture department, Punjab. 
He was appointed at Wheat Research Institute, Faisalabad-Pakistan. He has extensively been involved in the screening of wheat germplasm against biotic (wheat rusts) and abiotic (drought, salinity and heat) stresses under field and glass-house conditions using physiological techniques, wheat hybridization and selection programs. He launched breeding programs for the development of drought and heat tolerant wheat varieties.  

He is also engaged in multi-locational evaluation of advanced lines for the development of improved wheat varieties. Being a team member developed eight wheat varieties namely; Seher-06, Shafaq-06, Faisalabad-08, Lasani-08, AARI-11, Millat-11, Punjab-11 and Galaxy during his career.

Along with the research activities, capacity building, human resource development and consultancy is another aspect of his experience. Delivering radio talks and lectures to extension workers, farmers and students regarding wheat production technology and latest trends regarding wheat research has been the part of his duties. A number of undergraduate and post-graduate students from various universities have successfully completed their internship and thesis research work under his supervision. On his part there are twenty two research papers published and presented in refereed journals, national and international conferences.

He was awarded Dr. Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science & Technology Fellowship in 2012. Under the fellowship program, He attended various courses at CIMMYT-Mexico, University of Minnesota/Washington State University-USA, Kenyan Agriculture Research Institute/CIMMYT-Kenya.

During Borlaug fellowship, he got excellent learning experience working with distinguished wheat scientists of CIMMYT and USA. He got field and lab experience with special emphasis on wheat germplasm evaluation against rusts, race identification, gene postulation and molecular characterization of wheat rusts. At CIMMYT, he achieved the best report writing award among 23 course participants from 17 different countries. Borlaug fellowship helped in further refining his research capabilities to sustain food security in the country through wheat improvement.
