Zahid Mahmood

Mr. Zahid Mahmood did his MSc. (Hons) Agriculture with major subject Plant Breeding & Genetics from PMAS Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi. He initiated his career as Research Scientist at the PMAS Arid Agriculture University in a project “Development of Agricultural Systems in Chitral Valley” in 2000. In this project he evaluated genetic diversity in maize and wheat crops and introduced new high yielding hybrids and varieties in Chitral valley. He joined PARC in 2002 as Scientific Officer and worked at different institutes and collaborative programmes of PARC. Mr. Zahid evaluated and characterized wheat, sorghum and some medicinal herbs for biotic and abiotic stresses. He played significant role in rice varietal improvement by mutation breeding at NIAB, Faisalabad.

He was awarded Dr. Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science & Technology Fellowship Program in 2012 and worked at CIMMYT (Mexico), University of Minnesota, Washington State University, USDA Genebank (Idaho) USA and CIMMYT/KARI, Kenya. During Borlaug fellowship he worked on wheat improvement especially emphasized on rust resistance. He screened and characterized American, Pakistani, Afghani and Iranian wheat germplasm against stem and stripe rust races for major and minor resistant genes. He also worked on rust race identification, gene postulation and rust handling.

Since February, 2013 he is posted at Wheat Wide Crosses Programme, NARC and efficiently involved in wheat improvement with aim to identify and deployment of the resistant genetic sources for biotic and abiotic stresses. He evaluated and characterized wheat germplasm comprised of landraces, synthetic hexaploids, wild relatives, elite lines and international nurseries against stripe and stem rusts of wheat. Mr. Zahid is working in collaboration with national and international institutes for wheat rust evaluation, race identification and other ongoing glasshouse rust activities. He participated and successfully completed three international and six national professional trainings on crop plant improvement.  On his part there are eighteen research papers published and presented in refereed journals, national and international conferences.
